Every matched betting beginner hits the same fork in the road. One path is free: Team Profit, BetBoffins, a spreadsheet and some patience. The other costs money: Outplayed, OddsMonkey or Profit Maximiser, each promising more offers, faster tools and less faff. The marketing on both sides is loud. This guide does the maths quietly and gives you a way to decide.
Affiliate disclosure: Smart Money Betting earns a commission if you sign up to Outplayed, OddsMonkey or Profit Maximiser through our links. We do not currently earn anything from the free services. The comparisons below were written before we joined any of these programmes and have not been changed since, and we have tried to make the numbers the kind you can check yourself.
Our verdict: do the welcome offers for free. A free service will get you through most of the roughly £800 of UK sign-up offers without costing a penny. A paid subscription at £249.99 a year (£20.83 a month) only pays for itself once you are doing reloads regularly, and at that point it pays for itself quickly: two to four reload offers a month covers it, and consistent users report far more than that. The right answer depends on whether you plan to keep going after the welcome offers, not on which service has the best sales page.
What you get for free
The free options in the UK are better than they have any right to be. Team Profit offers 25-plus welcome offer guides, a basic oddsmatcher, a calculator, a profit tracker and a Facebook group of more than 30,000 people. It makes its money from exchange affiliate links, which costs you nothing. BetBoffins is a smaller, fully independent site run by a solo developer with no affiliate links at all: a calculator, a tracker, an odds converter and 37 offer walkthroughs, but no live oddsmatcher. And there is our own free matched betting calculator and guide.
Between them, the free tools cover everything you need for welcome offers. You will do a bit more manual work finding matches, and you will not have someone curating the daily reload offers for you, but the profit from a welcome offer is the same whether you found the match through a £350 tool or a free one.
What you get for paying
| Service | Entry price | Per month equivalent | Main things you gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outplayed Platinum | £249.99/year | £20.83 | Oddsmatcher across 80+ bookmakers, 50+ sign-up offers, Acca Catcher, Price Boost Tracker, 2UP Master, Extra Place Master, 7-day support with live chat |
| OddsMonkey Starter | £249.99/year or £39.99/month | £20.83 or £39.99 | OddsMatcher, 60+ weekly reloads, racing and dutching tools, forum |
| Profit Maximiser | £99/year or £12/month | £8.25 or £12 | Offer guides incl. casino, basic Odds Matcher, Telegram group (each-way and dutching via £150/month upsell) |
What you are really buying is three things. A faster, wider oddsmatcher that finds better matches in less time. A curated feed of reload offers so you do not have to trawl bookmaker sites. And specialist tools for the offer types that make up most long-term income: extra places, price boosts, 2Up, acca insurance. Support and community are the bonus. Full details are in our comparison table.
The break-even calculation
Take the most common paid option: £249.99 a year. Divided by twelve that is £20.83 a month, or about 68p a day.
Now look at what a reload offer is worth. A typical weekly free bet of £5 to £10, done properly, returns around 70 to 80 per cent of its face value, so £3.50 to £8. A good extra place race or a 2Up offer can be worth £10 to £15 in expected value, occasionally much more when a horse places. Call the average reload somewhere between £5 and £15 of expected value, which matches what experienced members report.
So the sums look like this:
- At £5 EV per offer, you need about 4.2 reload offers a month to cover £20.83. Roughly one a week.
- At £10 EV per offer, you need about 2.1 a month. One every fortnight.
- At £15 EV per offer, you need about 1.4 a month.
That is the break-even for the subscription on its own. But the fairer comparison is against what you could do for free, and the honest answer is that some of those reloads you could find yourself without a subscription. So the real question is: how many extra offers a month does the paid service help you do, either because it surfaced them or because its tools made them worthwhile? If the answer is two or more decent ones, it has paid for itself. Consistent users commonly report £300 to £1,000 a month from reloads, which is 15 to 50 times the cost. Occasional users doing a couple of reloads a month are close to the line and might be better off free.
One more factor: time. If the paid oddsmatcher saves you an hour a week of hunting for matches, that is roughly four hours a month. Whether four hours is worth £20.83 to you is a personal question, but for most people it is.
The hidden costs on both sides
Free is not entirely free. Without a curated reload feed you will miss offers, and without an extra place tool you will probably skip the most lucrative racing promotions altogether. Free oddsmatchers cover fewer bookmakers and refresh less often, so your qualifying losses will be slightly higher. Over a year these small gaps add up, and for an active user they can exceed the cost of a subscription.
Paid is not entirely honest either. Monthly prices are much worse value than annual, and annual plans auto-renew. Outplayed’s seven-day trial requires a card and its most common complaint is unexpected charges after the trial. OddsMonkey’s is cancellation friction. Profit Maximiser’s basic plan is cheap but the tools most long-term users want are behind a £150-a-month upsell. Refund windows are 14 days on the entry and mid tiers (Outplayed’s Pro tier is excluded). Set a reminder, read the terms, and do not sign up for a year until you have decided you are going to use it.
A simple decision path
Step one: are you still working through welcome offers? If yes, stay free. Use Team Profit or BetBoffins with our calculator and guide, and bank the first few hundred pounds. There is nothing a paid service adds here that justifies the cost.
Step two: have you finished the welcome offers and do you want to carry on? If no, stop here and enjoy the money. If yes, move to step three.
Step three: can you commit a few hours a week, most weeks? If not, either stay free and do the occasional reload, or try Profit Maximiser at £12 a month as a cheap middle ground with the caveats above. If you can, take a paid trial. Outplayed’s seven-day trial is the easiest way to test whether the tools change your results, and OddsMonkey is the one to take if you would rather pay monthly than commit to a year. Both are affiliate links, and our head-to-head compares them properly.
Step four: after a month on a paid service, count the offers you did that you would not have found or bothered with otherwise. If it is more than two or three, keep it and switch to annual. If it is fewer, cancel inside the refund window and go back to free with a clear conscience.
For the free route, Team Profit and BetBoffins are the two we would point you to. Our best matched betting sites page ranks everything in one place.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make money matched betting without paying for a service?
Yes. The welcome offers, worth around £800 in total across UK bookmakers, can be done entirely with free tools. Paid services mainly help with the ongoing reload offers afterwards.
How many reload offers do I need to cover a £249.99 subscription?
At £5 to £15 expected value per offer, between roughly 1.5 and 4 offers a month. Most active users do many more than that.
Is monthly or annual better?
Annual, if you are staying more than about six months. OddsMonkey’s monthly rate of £39.99 is nearly double the annual equivalent. Outplayed does not publish a monthly price on its site.
Which free service is best?
Team Profit for guides, an oddsmatcher and community. BetBoffins if you value independence and want a clean calculator and tracker with no affiliate links.
